As the world is recovering from the crises caused by the pandemic, the tourism industry is lacking thousands of professionals, among them also workers in the tour guiding sector. If you are interested to work in an international environment handling travelers and groups in harbors and airports, please find the details about the Travel Assistant training below.

TARGET GROUP AND REQUIREMENTS

The Travel Assistant training is targeted to:

1) Employed persons who meet the following requirements.
2) Unemployed customers of TE Office/local government pilot on employment (kuntakokeilu), and those customers of TE Office/local government pilot on employment, who are under risk of being unemployed and meet the following requirements.

Requirements:

– strong motivation to work in different types of customer servant duties at piers and airports, and escort groups

– previous work experience in the tourism industry or in customer service

– proper physical condition as the work requires a great deal of time standing and walking

– readiness for online learning

– adequate written and oral skills in English and at least one other foreign language (in case the working language is not English)

– satisfactory level of oral and written Finnish

ABOUT THE TRAINING

The training focuses on customer service and guiding skills. The final aim is to pass the competence test (unit: Guiding in foreign language/tutkinnon osa: Opastaminen vieraalla kielellä, which is a part of the Further vocational qualification of Guide Services).

This training consists of multiform learning including contact lessons, practical training and online learning. The contact lessons will be given mainly on the Töölö campus and, also, in case of the practical training, in central Helsinki.

The classes will be held in English.

Training period: 7 March – 14 June 2023.

A personal study plan will be made for each student; the duration of the studies might vary according to the individual background of each student.

THE AIMS OF THE TRAINING

– Develop the skills to work in the international tourism industry environment of the in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

– Develop and strengthen one’s own professional identity within the tourism industry.

– Find and understand the very own areas of development.

– Adopt the knowledge, the skills and the appropriate attitude which will allow the student to work in the tourism industry.

– Learn about the training and working possibilities in the tourism industry.

– Build professional networks.

– Complete the training and pass the competence test of the unit Guiding in foreign language (tutkinnon osa Opastaminen vieraalla kielellä) and find work opportunities as a free-lance Travel Assistant in the tourism industry, or continue the tourism studies (for example by completing the entire Further vocational qualification of Guide Services and become, hence, an authorized tour guide of Helsinki).

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

THE APPLICATION PERIOD HAS ENDED.

1) For employed persons:

Representatives of Perho Culinary, Tourism and Business College make a pre-selection based on the applications. In the application, it is important to describe the suitability and motivation to work as a Travel Assistant. After the pre-selection, some of the applicants will be invited for admission interviews. The interviews will be organized by Perho Culinary, Tourism and Business College (Helsinki) during the week 7 2023.
Please, note that the training fee is 150€ for students who are not customers of TE Office/local government pilot on employment.

2) For unemployed customers of TE Office/local government pilot on employment (kuntakokeilu), and those customers of TE Office/local government pilot on employment, who are under risk of being unemployed and meet the requirements:

If you fill out an electronic application without a bank ID, you must confirm your application at TE Office/ local government pilot on employment before the end of the application period.
